I wondered the same thing, I guess through repetition it sounds right. Take Kishacoquillas Creek, or just the "Kish".

Excellent thread question...

Other than the times when the flow of a sentence or the grammar calls for one or the other, I always just figured that the main purpose of the "the" was as an affectation, one of many that plague the sport. Sort of like one of those scarlet kerchiefs patterned with the C&R logo...

What makes a river, a river and what makes a creek , a creek. Most rivers are bigger than creeks, but some creeks are bigger than some rivers. Anyone got an answer?

I would guess it may have to do with the name coming from the formal name of something else. The Delaware was most likely named after a city or the Indian tribe, same with Letort or Brandywine, or Tionesta, The are all formal names for a person , place or group.

The other refer to maybe just a creek or rivers name based on its description. We made add the "The" to some in a perhaps unconcious attempt to personify the water. There by giving it the respect it deserves.

With rivers, don't people ALWAYS use "The?"

Regardless of whether the work "River" is included at the end or not?

People say:

Last Saturday I fished "The Delaware River."

Or

Last Saturday I fished "The Delaware."

But no one says:

Last Saturday I fished "Delaware River."

But, people do say:

Last Saturday I fished "Slate Run.

Regarding "The Pennypack." People say that? That seems cringe-worthy.

Mcsneek nailed it. "the" is only used in front of awesome waters....such as 'the Tully'.

FYI, anglers in SE PA fish the Pennypack, the Wissahickon, the Brandywine, the Perkiomen, and also fish Ridley, French, White Clay, Pickering and of course Valley Creek.

I have heard all those before, and all those sound reasonable, except for "the Pennypack."

I too believe it has to do with an exaltation of awesomeness. That said, I have never heard of "the Tionesta" although it would work if you drop the creek.

It also rolls off the tongue easier if the river or creek name is a compound word. Or multiple syllables....rather than one as in the Pine. But these do not seem to be hard and fast rules.

It certainly works better if the stream name is a noun or pronoun. not so much for adjectives or verbs.

Like Muddy Creek being called Then Muddy don't work, although I've heard it before. And Tulpohocken Creek being called the Tulpohocken but add the Creek and it loses the The. Change the name to Tully (sounds like an adjective) drop the Creek and it fits. The Tully. Add creek back and it fails. The Tully Creek.

In the end it seems to be a badge of honor if it can work. If not the stream has to earn its own merit.

Like Stinkhole Creek. It can be The Stinkhole (without Creek) or the Stink. But you would never say I am going to fish The Stinky.

The situation with rivers is different than with creeks, runs, etc.

From Wikipedia:

"The Conestoga River, also referred to as Conestoga Creek, is a 61.6-mile-long..."

"The" is used when it is called a river, but not when it is called a creek, even though it's the same waterway being referred to.

Isn't it is just standard English usage to always use "the" when it's a river?

Can anyone think of any exceptions?

If you fished Mississippi, rather than The Mississippi, you may have fished anywhere in Mississiippi, but not The Mississippi.

"Shoefly, dragonfly, get back t'your mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River.
Welllllll!" - John Fogerty - "Green River"

I still think as often as not, it is an affectation, as in " Yesterday, we fished The Walnut not far downstream from the Millcreek Mall water treatment outflow.."

Next, someone will start calling it "The Wall-A-Knute".

That way it'll sound more like it is located in British Columbia....:)
