What, in your mind, qualifies a fly fisher as a 'flat brimmer'?

I have seen the term 'Flat Brimmer' used on occasion here and was wondering what qualifies a fly fisher as one, in your eyes.

Uh, the obvious answer would be a ball cap with a flat brim?

The added phrase "yeah brah" separates the true douches from the pretenders. I think the look is a cross between urban gangsta and surfer, which is two styles that definitely should NOT be crossed.

The BASS crowd, very strangely, seems to have led the charge in the fishing world.

Well yeah, Pcray, I get the brim part hahaha. Just figured that there had to be more to it. I guess I haven't seen too many out there while I am fishing.

Never heard the term until put up here, but I thought it meant someone who wore a boater:

I thought only fried chicken salesmen wore hats like that.

It's like porn, you'll know it when you see it...

As if the look isn't silly enough, there is definitely an attitude that comes with it. This is the group that sees fly fishing as an "extreme" sport, kind of an outshoot from the snow boarding, rock climbing type.

Whole collection of them here:

Redington sent me a free hat once and of course it was the only flat brimmed hat on their website. It was also the most expensive hat but I would have preferred it if they sent me a hat that tends to fit me, as a person and my style, a little better. It is a high quality wool blend hat so I wear it sometimes because it is nice and it was free, but I feel a little goofy wearing a flat brimmed hat. I am not fishing to impress people with my clothing style and still feel a little weird in the hat, but I don't care if someone judges me for the hat I'm wearing. I'll still wear it occasionally. Although my ascot and my aviators I think makes for a better look. Lol

Or maybe my ascot cap is a flat cap? Or a cabbie-cap? Or whatever the proper name for the funny "old-man" golfer/cab driver hat is called.

I think if just wearing a flat brimmed hat makes you a real 'flat brimmer' then I am one. I have a black Simms hat my wife bought me for Christmas and like wearing it because when I wear my sunglasses with a curved brim they don't seem to fit right. The curved brim seems to force me to wear the hat higher on my head which annoys the hell out of me. I also have a pretty giant head...8-1/2 inches for a fitted hat. Oh well.

Just like owning a 1-weight, a flat-brimmed hat may be the optimal tool for the circumstances. This is why I invested in a hat rack for my car. Plus, I am bald.

PS-- look how flat my brim is in my avatar.

Hopefully Maurice will order some flat brimmed hats in the next batch.

Chad Brown may be the ultimate flat brimmer. Happen to think what he's doing is pretty cool and if I was half my age I would get a hat just to support him.

So does it refer to caps or hats? Both have been mentioned so far.

I think I read an article on his journey into the depths of fly fishing. Was he pretty suicidal, but then found fly fishing and fell in love with it? If so, that was a great article and was really happy for him.

Urban Dictionary Definition
Flatbrimmer
An annoying sub-culture of people who wear over sized clothes and flatbrim hats with stickers still attached. Also known as "yeah dudes" or "yeah brahs"
Not many are famous due to lack of ambition.

Oh...well....I'm not a flat brimmer then. I take my stickers off and don't wear baggy clothing. I do say dude here and there, but not brah.

It's this without a doubt

He seems like a decent guy who likes flyfishing. What's the problem?

I never heard the term "flat brimmer" at all before today, let alone heard it applied to flyfishers.

But, I'm suspecting that calling certain flyfishers "flat brimmers" is just a variation on the age old theme of "Kids Today!!"
