Snowy Morning Trout

I woke up yesterday and decided that it felt quite warm, the winds were still, the snow was beautiful and that I should treat myself to a little winter trout fishing. I've been able to make it out 4 times in the last 10 days or so for short trips and to do some exploration of new water and caught fish every trip but yesterday the fishing was superb. I decided to drive right to one of my favorite winter time stretches of Kish and see what I could nymph up.

I hit the water at about 9:30 am and by 10 I had landed about 5 wild browns and one leftover stockie rainbow. That first half hour I had some fast and furious action for a winter day. I didn't land anything huge or spectacular but it sure felt good to have the wild browns more than willing to cooperate. The temp was only about 30° so my line didn't instantly freeze up and I didn't have to bust ice out of my guides all that often. I fished up through a little more nice water and only picked up another trout. For only about an hour total on the water I think I did pretty well. All things considered a great day.

I was fishing a double nymph rig with a size 18 pheasant tail and a size 22 red brassie. All fish but one took the brassie.

Sounds like a nice time on the stream. Is that a stocked rainbow along with that wild brown?

Protect the resource, let them go.

Yeah that was a leftover stocked rainbow that either swam upstream or came downstream from the stocked waters. I was fishing the "oldest" Class A section of the stream that is totally unstocked and has been for as long as I can remember.

Funny thing is I know people who think fishing that stretch is really stupid because it "doesn't get stocked."

I know where you were as I fish that area quite a bit. I have had plenty of people tell me there ain't no fish there. As you know, there are plenty but you have to put in the work for them sometimes. I was there a few weeks back and had almost identical results though I caught all of mine on streamers fished slow and deep. Good report
