When fishing with my friend whos back from college, he tends to get a little upset. He's not all that good, but getting there. For example, when im catching fish every other cast even when he's using the same fly, he's getting nothing. After i felt bad i put down my rod and was trying to help him further. I would cast the fly where i think it should be and then hand him the rod and tell him what to do.
Well half the time he was WAY late on setting the hook. One thing that i think you should always be doing to increase your hook up rate when nymphing with a indicator is expect the strike. Anticipate it coming, alot of the times i talk to myself, watching it drift saying, "Wait for itttt, wait for ittttt" This way i can set the hook almost before the indicator is even fully dipped, pulled under or just stopped. Most of the time when you miss a hook set on a fish is because your dumbfounded there watching the indicator not knowing when youre going to have to react.
