This spider had to be 4 inches in diameter, I tried to get my reel next to it for scale, but it scurried away. From my limited research, looks like it's a Fishing Spider. Cool.

I was walking out of the Little J one evening. Stopped in knee deep water to put on my headlamp. Turned on the light and looked down to make sure my vest pockets were zipped and one of those things was half on my knee and half on some floating debris. I hate spiders but managed not to freak. They are big and creepy looking though.

almost put my hand on those countless times while climbing about on the yough bank. You often find yourself climbing up enormous boulders, and I have had a few occassions where I looked at a handhold and saw one of those a few inches from my hand. I hate spiders, and these things are freakishly large. Do they bite?

From what I read they do bite, but it says not much worse than a bee sting. This thing barely moved with me right next to it, but my reel scared it away, I think they're more afraid of us than we of them. I tell my 6 year old all the time, if you don't bother them (snakes, bugs, etc...), they won't bother you. It generally holds true.

Almost nothing gets under my skin...except for when I see one of those things along the stream. I still remember the 1st time I saw one when I was a kid. The just make my skin crawl. Not sure why.

I saw one of these spiders on a rocky bank of a small Cumberland Valley stream and I made a motion with my boot to scare it away. Instead it reared up and raised its front half off the ground. I applauded its effort and walked around.

I have seen these on various streams and shudder when I see them. This photo is from a few years back, on Pine Creek. There were lots of little black tadpoles in the very shallow water and he was having a snack. If you look closely under neath the spider he has a tadpole and was feasting on it.

Wiki info here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomedes You'd think someone would have a fly to imitate this creature.

I saw one once on the Lackawaxen and hope I never see another one. Spiders don't usually creep me out but these things look like they came from a horror movie.
