According to this:

http://www.erh.noaa.gov/buf/laketemps/lktemp.html

The Lake Erie water temperature should drop an average of 5 degrees between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15. From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, another 10 degree drop should be expected. From current 77 degrees, the lake is on track to be in the low sixties by mid-October. There will be Steelhead at the mouths and a few in the creeks by then.

From my very little experience, periodic light to moderate rains/snow throughout the season is most helpful to the fishery. Last year's spate and drought cycles were long and it made for very inconsistent fishing.

You're just about right on there Jack. You'll see some agressive fish make a few early runs in October, but once the middle of the month rolls around, there should be atleast one good run in by then. It ALL depends on the flow of the tribs. You need a few hard rains for the trib levels to go up so the fish can come in. Water temp is important for them, but if they don't have the flow, they can't enter the streams.

I have gone in early october in years past, but the prime fishing starts towards the end of the month. The fish are spread out by then, and so are the fishermen. I don't like the combat fishing anymore. I did whatever I could to catch one when I first started, but unless you're next to some nice guys, it just doesn't make for a good day of fishing. I'm pumped for the season to start though, can't wait!

I've seen small, but fishable numbers make exploratory runs in sept.
Hey...catch a steelhead early before they head back to the lake, then hit presque isle for some bass and pike in the afternoon. still sounds good to me!

I've even seen them a couple miles up elk Creek in late August, but that was a cold August.

then, the water dropped, and some got caught in small holes with their backs sticking out of the water. It didn't stop people from trying to "catch" them.

I have caught them in September in the Grand River, 10 miles up, and the Ohio runs are later.

Those early ones can be agressive because they didn't have to run a gauntlet.

But if you live more than an hour away, it isn't worth a special trip until some time in October.

I'll keep the voting open till the end of the month. It does however look like the last option is going to end up the winner. Once we find the actual dates for the event we can see if people want to share hotel rooms, camp out, or stay at a locals house in the area. I'll probably book the pavillion at Folly's campground again, and we'll find some meeting places throughout the day for fishing and eating/drinking. If anyone has any questions, ideas or wants to help with the planning you can PM me.

I am going to try to attend. I think any of those weekends would work for me.

Inquiry is being made from Florida as to the date. Not too far off to make a decision soon.

It's a landslide as to the date so I'm just going to jump the gun and announce the 2010 Steelhead Jam will be on November 12th through 14th. I'll put together a few plans over the weekend and post them in the Events form, and probably on here also. For those newcomers to steelhead fishing, refer to the steelhead thread in the General forum for basic tips and tricks, and the thread in the Fly Tying forum for flies to use, how to tie them, and when to use them. I refreshed both from last year due to the great amount of info in them and not wanting to repeat all the same info year to year.

Looks to be a fun event. I look forward to seeing everyone again and some new faces. Here's hoping we don't get blown out that weekend
