It's common in tundra areas for large trout to feed heavily on migrating mammals this time of year.

Large salmonids make shrews, moles, and rodentia part of their diet. If it moves and looks like food in the water, it is fair game to eat. Imitating these prey is one of my favorite way to catch fish at night.

The lesson here is always have a mouse or two in the fly box. I fished a spring creek out west last summer that is very technical. You have to fish small flies, matcht the hatch, and get the perfect drift to catch fish on this stream. I caught a couple of average fish in the 14" range that morning on a size 18 PMD. As I was walking back to the car, I saw a guy fishing a mouse pattern. He was killing them! He said he had caught a bunch of fish that morning asnd as we were talking I saw him catch a 20" fish. Big fish like big meals.

When had rainbows and a big grayling rise to mice in AK. Boychick hit it on the head. Always have a small deerhair mouse in the box (and a big rat tucked away somewhere in your pack if you can ).
