Cabin Rentals

I've been researching cabin rentals, specifically in the middle of the state and I'm looking for a little help. Would anybody know if there's a place where I can rent a cabin that's got a trout stream within walking distance of where I stay? I'm trying to plan a get away for my wife and I next spring...the kind of trip that when we get there, the truck is parked for a couple of days and we relax in nature. The places I've researched only say fishing near by. I'm not looking to be lazy, but I thought it would be nice to boot up and just head to the stream and when I get tired just head back to the cabin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear willscreek,

You may already be doing this but if you're not, you should look at the following website, http://www.homeaway.com/.

PA doesn't have a whole lot of opportunities for cabin rentals right alongside trout streams but you may also want to look at cabin rentals in some of the State Parks?

For example, there are rental cabins at RB Winter State Park that allow you to walk to Halfway Dam and Rapid Run. In the State Parks you won't always have access to prime fishing grounds but there usually are several other options close by that are worth investigating.

Keeping with RB Winter, you have White Deer Creek 10 minutes away and Spring, Penns, and Big Fishing Creek within 30 to 45 minutes depending on how fast you drive and what roads you take. There are also several smaller streams withing the Bald Eagle State Forest worth checking out and the entire area is a pretty nice place in my opinion.

Good luck in your search, I'm sure you'll find someplace worth checking out!

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Many of the state parks have streams runing through them and have cabins. That would be a good place to start. Many of the other cabins in PA that you see along streams are owned by hunting and fishing clubs or private individuals that go to their cabins for hunting and fishing and don't rent them.

Don't know how far north you want to go, but my family has stayed here almost every year for the past 20 years:

The Little Kettle runs RIGHT behind the cabin. Good stream w/ wilds and natives in the small waters. You can walk a few hundred yards right down the side of the mountain and be fishing. Hear the creek from your back porch.

You could also check out www.vrbo.com vacation rentals by owner or check out craigslist as well. I have utilized both sites for vacation getaways in the past.

another option is west virginia, there are some nice places down there with great fishing nearby.
I stay in this town pretty often, bunks and one private room above the restaurant(trust me, it's funky!), or rent a room at the b&b, trout stream runs between the two buildings.

never stayed here, but looks nice,

SBecker and I talked about his place, looks nice too!

anyhow, just some options if you head south of the border.

First let me say thanks to those of you giving input. Secondly, bikerfish, you really struck a nerve with me. I could go 3 or 4 hours north and fish or... I could head south the same distance and fish that Elk Spring place that the host of Flyfishing the World dedicated 2 shows to...or something else in that area. I guess I can't go wrong either way. Great idea there man.

Hemlock Acres has a couple newer cabins that are pretty nice depending on what you want. It's right by Penns, Fishing Creek is right down the road, Spring is not far, and LJR is within day-trip distance.

willscreek, I understand wanting to stay right on a creek, something about waking up, fishing for an hour or so, then heading back to the cabin to get some coffee and breakfast, all without getting in a vehicle! same thing in the evening, nothing like fishing till dark, then sitting on the porch, staring at the creek and enjoying a well deserved beer.
yeah, I saw you were in greencastle, your not far from some nice places in WV or even VA, you might want to research that as well.

Hi Willscreek, here is where my wife and I spent a couple of relaxing days. You could walk, but a bike would be better to fish Spruce and Lil J. If you like old log houses, this is the place. Owners are real nice too! http://www.fairfieldfarmguestcabin.com/Home.html
