Just a quick note for anyone who's interested. Got back from Pulaski on Monday. Saw a fair amount of fish on the river (DSR was apparently nuts but day 1 was sold out and my party decided to go elsewhere day 2, against my advice).

Had a good time but failed to hook up even once.

I was determined to get actual takes from the kings, as opposed to the alternative. Spent my time swinging flies on my new spey rod and drifted some eggs and stoneflies. No luck. Though I'm likely just trying to relieve my bruised ego, I'm beginning to think that the likelihood of true takes from the SR kings is *drastically* reduced outside of the DSR -- as a result of the pressure/lead beating the fish take on their way upriver.

I'd definitely recommend fishing the DSR if the extra $30 a day works for you. The runs were strong both days and a few people I've talked to, including a very reputable guide, says the action has been far better in the DSR this season vs. elsewhere.

Saw plenty of hookups. Every single one lined, lifted, or otherwise snagged.

In fact, in 2 days, it wasn't until 6pm on the second day that I saw another fisherman outside our party that was actually fly fishing, despite the hundreds of fly rods in use.

Hopefully steelhead in November will produce better results, and dispatch some of the "fly fishermen" the salmon run brings.

Still great seeing those powerful fish in action.

Good report. My computer has issues sending PMs, so I'm not sure if you got my reply.

I will post my results next thursday!

Jay - nope, didn't get your reply. Was beginning to wonder if you got my PM. :) Glad you did.

Really wish I hadn't struggled so much up there. Still anxious to get back for steelhead though.

Headed up next week-I'm thinking the salmon run should be slowing down by then, but steelies and browns picking up. I'll probably be spending most of my trip fishing the DSR, but I'll probably head upriver at some point to hopefully get my son into a king.

The salmon run won't be slowing down until after Columbus day in my experience.

I'm going the week after Jay and I am not too happy to hear I may have to line, lift or snag to get my picture taken with a Chinook. I hope my magic flies draw an "I'm-biting-you-because-you-are-so-ugly" strike or two.

Oh, don't worry, Jack. My lousy fishing is probably the most likely culprit. :)

Although, one of the other guys in my party is 10x the fisherman I am, and he had the same experience. He hooked up one fish, and it was one he intentionally lined 1 hour before we had to leave. He took the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach. He had a 25+ pounder on for about 10 minutes before losing it.

Jack,

You plan to fish the DSR right?

It's a different ballgame down there. The fish are fresh, and have yet to run the gauntlet.

I am a poor steelhead angler as it is, so my expectations are low, but if I can get a pic with a legit King or Coho, it will shorten my bucket list.

Thereby confirming my stupidity for allowing my companions to talk me out of the DSR on day 2.

Grr.

I'll try to post a full report in a day or two, but all I can say is I spent most of my time in town and had more than a few biters, in the middle of the gauntlet. It definitely gets better the lower you go, but there are plenty to be had upriver.

Boyer

PS Missed a huuuge steelie, which would have been my first. Three misses with the net. :-(

I'll be escorting Jack to Paluski. I'm getting really excited about the trip. I've never caught a salmon and my biggest fish ever was a 12 pound steelhead from Elk Creek last year. Our plan is to fish the DSR Fri and Sat Oct 9-10.

That reminds me, Greg, I'll be wearing an apricot chiffon strapless wader, so I'm going with apricot roses with white freesia corsage for your chest-pack.

We've got the stretch limo and we don't have to have it back till Sunday...

Don't follow ...

Are you suggesting the liners/snaggers would be pitching a fit if I had posted that on SalmonCrazy?

If so, I'd have to agree, and that's precisely why I didn't bother posting it there. :)

I'd get your DSR pass on-line while you still can.

I think it would be more like stocking rainbows in a shark tank. It would cause a belligerent frenzy.

Had a woman come in yesterday for sinkers up there as usual because of the lead laws. Only she didnt want the usual size #7 or #8, we actually didnt have sinkers large enough for her. So I sez,
"What...are you guys snagging them?" in a joking manner.
She sez,
"Oh no, we fish the smaller tribs that the salmon swim into." in a more serious manner.

I can only imagine what my face looked like. Something that included blinking twice.
