Just a quick note for anyone who's interested. Got back from Pulaski on Monday. Saw a fair amount of fish on the river (DSR was apparently nuts but day 1 was sold out and my party decided to go elsewhere day 2, against my advice).
Had a good time but failed to hook up even once.
I was determined to get actual takes from the kings, as opposed to the alternative. Spent my time swinging flies on my new spey rod and drifted some eggs and stoneflies. No luck. Though I'm likely just trying to relieve my bruised ego, I'm beginning to think that the likelihood of true takes from the SR kings is *drastically* reduced outside of the DSR -- as a result of the pressure/lead beating the fish take on their way upriver.
I'd definitely recommend fishing the DSR if the extra $30 a day works for you. The runs were strong both days and a few people I've talked to, including a very reputable guide, says the action has been far better in the DSR this season vs. elsewhere.
Saw plenty of hookups. Every single one lined, lifted, or otherwise snagged.
In fact, in 2 days, it wasn't until 6pm on the second day that I saw another fisherman outside our party that was actually fly fishing, despite the hundreds of fly rods in use.
Hopefully steelhead in November will produce better results, and dispatch some of the "fly fishermen" the salmon run brings.
Still great seeing those powerful fish in action.
