Small Stonefly, Conodoguinet, 2/1/2014

I saw this tiny stonefly today on the ice. I looked for more…but only the one. Less than 3/8" total length. Body with out antenna and tails was about a 1/4". Not to much bigger than a large midge.

I would say it's a little black stone.

I would agree with it being a little black stone. They climb onto the ice on the banks to hatch.

Aside from being "A little black stonefly". what you have is a Capniidae stonefly. Most likely Allocapnia sp. There are 15 species of Allocapnia in PA, and without a look at the specimen under a scope I'd hesitate to put a species name on it.

I saw many stoneflies on saturday on the banks of the Conodoquinet crawling on the snow. Some where the same size as previously mentioned (tiny…midge size), while others were more of a normal expected size. Additionally, I scooped up a fluttering tan 3/4" fly.
