Hopper season is here. The fish aren't the only ones that enjoy the hoppers. These orb weavers were cleaning up on them today. I walked through a meadow today that was chock full of these spiders. Many of them had some pretty big hoppers all wrapped up in their webs. I realize they aren't insects and they aren't even fish food as a rule, but they are really cool critters. I love seeing them and the patterns on their abdomens can be almost as unique as the spot patterns on a wild trout.

Neat. I saw a big orb weaver this morning - first one I've seen this year.

I don't think the hoppers have been quite as thick in my neck of the woods this year. Perhaps the cooler, wet weather we've had this summer may have impacted them? Anyway, still plenty of hopper time. I think late August and Sep is prime hopper time around the Cumberland Valley and I still see a lot of big ones well into October.
