Anyone have troubles with tip tops wearing prematurely (grooves)?
How often do people replace them?
After 3 years (about 750 hrs) my 6wt St Croix legend ultra developed shallow grooves, which i suspect is shortening the life of my lines.

I don't see the same problem with my other rod that's seen significantly more hours on it. The 6 wt is used for streamer (rarely) and heavy nymph fishing.
I wash the line every 3 trip or after fishing dirty water.

ideas and advice would be appreciated

Dear nymphingmaniac,

I never noticed a groove in any fly rod tip top. You must have lots of fish get you into your backing. ;-)

A light polishing with a piece of emery cloth or 2000 grit or higher wet/dry sandpaper will probably take care of that tip top so that it can last a while longer.

I've done that on spinning rods that still have the old time chrome guides and it's worked out fine.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

I had grooves start on the tip top of my 10' 5wt GLX. I just switched that tip top with a ceramic one. Probably won't wear that one out in my lifetime.

buy more rods

^^^That's the answer for everything^^^^

Heat the tip top slowly with a hair dryer until the glue lets go. Have patience and it will come off. Replace with a silicon carbide tip top. Your mileage may vary.
