Has anyone ever used those Cortland Combos you can get at Walmart? A buddy of mine wants to start fly fishing, but just wants a cheap set up to start. I started off on that Pflueger combo everyone sells and it wasn't THAT bad. I still use it a lot actually. I didn't know if anyone had any incite on the Cortland ones.

Thanks!

I have a Cortland combo from Gander Mt. I got 10 years ago. It wasn't a bad rod, but the reel and line suck.

I think the Cabelas combos are better.

Heck Hardy and Greys has combos for $135.

I use a $20 Eagle Claw rod from Walmart, I prefer it to some of much more expensive rods, as well.

When the line that slowly cooks in my trucklet finally crumbles, I'll replace it with a $12 Cortland from Sprawlmart.

The reel is an old Medalist, but I'd have no qualms using one of thsoe Cortland Fairplay clickers for $14 from Walmart, either.

All in, that's about $46. Add another $3 for the backing if'n you need it.

Well, it wasn't a combo, I put my own reel and line on it.

But I do have a Cortland GRX, and its one of my favorite and most used rods, despite having a very nice boo and names like Loomis and Sage in the lineup.

The Cortland is a 7'6" 4/5 wt, and I use 5 or 6 wt line on it, it's my brookie stream specialist.

I don't know if they still make the GRX, but it was among their cheapest "named" models they had, and it was included in some of their better combo's. The rod itself went around $90 I think. I don't know what rods they have in those combo's these days.

Thanks for the comments guys! I still freakin' love this Pflueger I have and it was only $40 at the time. I replaced the tippet and leader it came with and it's still going strong. Glad to see I'm not the only cheap fly angler :) The only thing I hate about this rod is it flies apart during casts if I'm not checking it often... Need to get some wax on the ends!

I bought a Cortland 1000 series in '85. Work and works well. 6-7 wt. 8'6" used for everything from bluegills to trout to bass and even catfish.
