Does anyone use jig hooks for egg flies for steelhead ? Just tied some up and like the looks of them but not sure if they are strong enough ?

For Erie steelhead you shouldn't have a problem. It's pretty rare to straighten or break any hook up there unless it's really small. I wouldn't hesitate in tying on a hook like that.

Jig hooks work well for me. I have used Matzou sickle hooks and the Mustad steelhead jig hooks. There are many NYS people who use steelhead jigs suspended under a float over tough bottoms and they usually use a steelhead or other heavy jig. Plenty of jig hooks would work, but I would not use crappie, Aberdeen, other other light wire jig hook styles. I generally do not weight steelhead flies on jig hooks and at max use a large glass bead.

This place has more jig hooks than you can imagine

Thank you for the replies, I am using Hends barbless size 14 and 16 jig hooks and slotted beads . The hooks just seem very light. I was hoping I may not get hung up on the bottom as much with jig hooks .
