My son who is 11 took a fly tying class and loved it. Made some of his own creations and then caught some bass across the street with them. He was on cloud nine. What is a good starter kit for him that includes all the required tools, etc. the Orvis kit is $200 which is a little high, but feasible if it is a good kit. He wants to use his own money so I want him to get the best kit for his money. Thank you.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, I'd recommend the $30 kit from Cabelas in the wooden case. It has all the necessary tools and an adequate vise. Then spend the rest on materials as he finds flies he wants to fish.

I tied with that kit for years before giving it to a kid wanting to start tying.

just look through the last page or 2 or this forum, there's probably this question 2 times at least. just read either thread. no one's opinion has changed.
