Here's a video of John Barr's BWO Flashback Emerger. This pattern can be fished in most water columns with only slight variations, and has been an effective pattern for years. Feel free to modify this (which you may already have!) to suit your own needs, and be sure to share any of your own designs.

Nice video Tim. Does Barr explain why he prefers cutting the tail rather than sizing it at tie in? I'm guessing the fibers will more effectively punch through the film, but I may be over thinking things.

Tail is tied to represent a trailing shuck. So I guess he figured why not just clip it. I clip mine and have caught plenty of fish on this fly. I actually now just tie the tail with a piece of brown flexi floss.

Tiogadog got it; the clipped tail represent the shuck of the mayfly. I have seen variations include Antron as the material, and I think it's up to you to modify as needed.

I appreciate the comment regarding the video,

Tim

I still don't get it, but I guess it does not matter. Seems tying in the tail at the final length would give the same effect with one less step. I use mallard that way for shucks and it does the job. Nice pattern either way!
Mike.
