This is an important TU action alert.

HR 2016

It's not too late, you can still take action on this important bill. Visit our online action center before Wednesday, April 9th to support the National Landscape Conservation System (H.R. 2016), making the Conservation System a permanent and valued part of our hunting and angling heritage.

WHY WE CARE
The National Landscape Conservation System (Conservation System) incorporates 26 million acres of federally-managed lands and waters specially designated for conservation by Congress and the President. Established in 2000, the Conservation System currently does not have permanent protection and H.R. 2016, the National Landscape Conservation System Act, would give it the needed permanent protection.

The Conservation System includes the "Gold Medal" trout waters of the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area in Colorado and legendary hunting found in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana. The national treasures comprising the Conservation System include magnificent forests, open deserts, lush grasslands and vibrant rivers that, in many cases, provide remarkable hunting and angling. These areas can and should be unified in a system of protected lands. »

DETAILS ABOUT THE LEGISLATION
This legislation does not change management of the lands in question, nor does it require additional expenditures (the Congressional Budget Office scored the bill at $0). Public access, hunting, fishing and other activities that occur on these lands will still be allowed.

The legislation only seeks congressional authorization of this important public lands system. A congressional stamp of approval would send an important message to the American people and the millions of residents of the growing West about the conservation legacy of the BLM and the lands the agency manages, including thousands of important hunting and angling areas. »learn more

I got a nice follow up email. Evidently the House legislation passed. I hope the Senate follows through!

With the help of dedicated Trout Unlimited members like you, the House of Representatives passed the National Landscape Conservation System Act yesterday by a vote of 278 to 140. The legislation still has to go back to the Senate for final passage, where companion legislation awaits floor action, but for now hunters and anglers from around the nation are celebrating the vote.

This important legislation is the beginning of a new conservation focus for the Bureau of Land Management. Although it does not change on-the-ground management, it gives places like the Gunnison Gorge, Upper Missouri Breaks, the Wild and Scenic Rio Grand River and the Steens Mountains far more status within the agency. Not only will this legislation help solidify a conservation focus for the Bureau of Land Management, it also permanently protects the Conservation System while still allowing access for hunting and angling.

This is a major win for hunters and anglers. It will help ensure our access to some spectacular fishing and hunting locations and will help the BLM raise the public's awareness of these areas.

Sincerely,

Sara Tucker
