I live close to this land, and have been closely following this issue since it began.

Even though it’s been several years, the issue has still not been resolved. The future of this land is still up in the air. It will probably be taken up again by the legislature in the next session.

I’m assuming that you are asking about this because you wish to convey your thoughts about the future of this land to our elected officials. Below is contact info for key figures on this issue. (Letters are better than emails, but emails are helpful too.)

Senator Jake Corman, 34th District, 236 Match Factory Place, Bellefonte , PA 16823 jcorman@pasen.gov (717) 787-1377

Representative Kerry Benninghoff, 171st District, 209 South Allegheny Street , Suite B, Bellefonte , PA 16823 kbenning@pahousegop.com (717) 783-1918

Honorable Edward G. Rendell, Governor
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
225 Main Capitol Building
Harrisburg, PA 17120

Your own state legislators. To find their contact information, go here:

Here in Centre County, the proposal to convey the land to Penn State and Benner Township is extremely unpopular. The option favored by the very great majority of flyfishermen, and the public at large, is to have the land conveyed to DCNR or the Game Commission.

If that is your view also, then you can state that in simple terms to the elected officials. It is not necessary to write a long document.

Thank you in advance for taking time to contact your elected officials about this important issue.

The chairman of the Centre County Commioners, Jon Eich, recently weighed in on the issue:
----------------------------------------------------------
Commissioner Jon Eich said at Tuesday's commissioners' meeting he would favor a state agency, such as Game Commission or the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, to take over the large tract because they are better suited to manage and preserve it.

"The Spring Creek Canyon is one of the premier environmental features of Centre County. It is in part that way because it has been protected from overuse by the Department of Corrections ... for nearly 100 years," he said. "Whoever ends up with this property is going to have to have the resources necessary to manage it."

Eich said he believes the Game Commission and DCNR are the two entities in the state that have both the mission and the resources to manage that area properly.

"Either one of those two is on on the top of my list of who should have the canyon," he said.

Incidentally, for those following, the competing Bills are again in House Committees. The Bill Numbers have changed as legislation does not survive from session to session. Here is the current info:

Bennighoff Bill (transfer to Game Commission)
Regular Session 2009-2010
House Bill 1158

Hanna Bill (Transfer to PSU)
Regular Session 2009-2010
House Bill 1785

Once again, links to State Government committee of the House where the Bills reside presently, with links:

Sadly Penn State basically owns the county so whatever they want they will somehow find themselves getting.

Too many government entities do not care about fly fishing, they care about their own greedy desires.

That's a pretty broad and baseless statement. Care to expand?

My view is that the land should be owned by a state resource land agency.

1) First choice: DCNR
2) Second choice: PA Game Commission

Either agency would do a good job, in my opinion, based on what I've seen on their lands.
