For those of you that may not be aware, the EPA released an updated draft of their risk assessment regarding large scale mining operations in the Bristol Bay watershed.

As part of this release process, they have re-opened the public comment period. This is a very important part of the process, as the EPA makes a determination on whether to leverage the Clean Water Act to prevent mining from coming to the world's most prolific sockeye salmon fishery (not to mention the 30-some other species that abound in the waters of the Bristol Bay watershed).

If you haven't already, please head here to submit your comment:

You bet. I really hope everyone takes a few minutes to do this. It's an immeasurably important issue that the public needs to speak up on. The other side of the aisle isn't going to let go of $500 billion in ore easily.

what people don't realize is that the ONLY people going to profit from this is the mining company, and the politicians that are up their asses. everyone else will have to deal with the damage. we've lived this long on this planet without mining here, don't think we need to tear it up now just to live. but greedy #censor# think it's the only way.

It's also worth mentioning that the two mining companies that own the rights to the Pebble deposit are both foreign companies.

Oh, and also, the University of Alaska just released a study that estimates the value of the Bristol Bay salmon fishery at 1.5 billion dollars annually. Sport fishing not included.

The numbers don't even look good.

Since this isn't exactly stirring feverish responses, it should be noted that commenting via TU's site enters you to win a trip to Alaska.

Not that this extra motivation should be needed, but it certainly can't hurt!
