I got a book after listening to "Ask About Fly Fishing" a monthly show on the web. As a matter of fact it's on tonight but you can catch it after the show as a podcast. Anyway, the book I got is "Simple Flies" by Morgan Lyle. He describes techniques for tying and fishing them (52 of them). He states why he thinks they work so successfully on trout and other species.

I certainly do not want to start a war over tying more complex patterns as I enjoy that myself. Morgan defends that skill and the desire to create beautiful and complex flies but gives good logic for his simple approach.

A recommended read.

I agree Gene, I have the same book. Flies do not have to be complicated to work. Many simple flies are very effective. The green weenie is a good example. IMO a great book for the beginning fly tier.

Stop at the local shop, buy a few of their suggestion. Save one or two on an index card with the name size date stream fished. After a few trips, you'll know what to tie.
