I am attempting to put my first fly line onto a reel on my own and have had this question for a while. I've never put line on by myself before, and was curious if I had the reel set up for using the correct hand. I cast with my right hand and reel with my left.

My question is....should the clicking occur when line is taken out or when I am reeling in?

Thanks for the help.

If it just clicks in one direction, it should happen when like is taken out.

Ok, that is what I thought. I just bought a Allen XL reel and it is really nice. I need to figure out how to change the retrieve. Has anyone done this yet?

Figured it out. Nevermind! Thanks.

Another way to tell is that if it has a drag (the knob on the side opposite the crank). Tighten the drag, and it should be harder to turn it a certain direction. That's your outbound direction.

Let us know how you like the reel.
