wgm we will get you your hero shot. As long as the weather dose its part it should be awsome fishing for the jam. We got good number in the creeks already but need more rain to get another good push of fish. Water conditions are horrible right now super low and clear and fish are ultra line shy.

I need to do quite a bit more reading before the jam to understand steelies, but do the same fish stay in the tribs until spring or do they "do their thing" and then return? Is steelie fishing good from September through spring or are certain times of the 'season' better than others?

wgmiller,
I'd be happy to do camera duty. I'd never fished steelhead until last years' jam and had a blast. Here's hopin for a bunch of hero shots this year.

My understanding is that steel can be found in the Erie tribs generally from Sept through April with prime time being late Oct till ice up. The fish come in and out of the creeks and move up or down depending on water levels. I'm not sure how many actually successfully spawn (probably very few here in PA) or return to the lake. I'd imagine a large proportion are actually caught and harvested but I suppose some may return for multiple years.

Some do indeed return the following year. Unlike salmon, they don't die after spawning. Your second year class fish will be in the 7-8lb range or larger. I've never fished the tribs in the spring, but it's supposed to make for some good fishing with a lot less pressure.

I remember reading a stat somewhere that only 20% are harvested with the remaining 80% being released...

flipnfly & JasonS - I could use a little help twisting Gene's arm to make it up for the Jam. He's weakening....

It would be a real shame to eat all that pie without the Zackmeister. If he doesn't go, I'll be forced to text him pictures of pie and all the fish we catch.

Jeff - Not sure you know Gene (gzacckey here on PAFF). He was the "poster child" for the blog entry dkile put up after last year's Steelhead Jam.

He's a member of your TU, and would be interested in riding up with you. Twist, twist.

I spoke to him a couple of times today. He's gonna try to put in for a few vacation days - he'll call me some time next week to let me know for sure.

Wet - Saw Bob today. He's pysched! Looking forward to fishing with you guys again.

H.A.

I've got a shot at it. Have to see what the boss says, thats a long drive for what would amount to one day of fishin.

If I do go, I'd be goin from Chester Cty, leavin dinnertimish Friday evening, and wanting to get out at a decent time Sunday. Open to carpool.

Lodging arrangements are still in question till final decision is made. I have a camp about an hour out. I think I would definitely stay closer to Erie Sat. night, but since its on the way, I might stay there Friday night and get an early start to meet up Saturday.

Pat - Jay might be interested in carpooling. He was looking to head up Friday after work, and wanted to split the drive/gas with someone...

I don't even mind Jerry, coz I'm used to it, but you realize most people have no idea who you mean?

Your hassle-fu is strong, because you know where to apply pressure, but you're up against an almost complete lack of appeal to this, especially when combined with a six hour drive.

I just have a hard time getting excited about it, other than the thought of listening to the screamin' pawl on a reel, meh?
